AND LEARN SPANISH.|||There are several good dictionaries I can recommend. One is published by the University of Chicago and is soft-covered. Cassells has a Spanish-English dictionary, although they're known for their French texts. Oxford publishes a great Spanish English dictionary in hard cover. I believe Cambridge publishing also has one, although I'm not familiar with it.

I would advise that you go to a store such as Border, Books-a -Million, or Barnes and Nobles and look at their language dictionaries in the reference section. One key for a quality dictionary is that it has examples of definitions and more than one translation or definition for many of the words. Take out several dictionaries, look up specific words, and compare them. Which book is more explicit, has clearer definitions, shows examples, and also gives you definitions that show how the word is used in context?

For Spanish-English words, look in the Spanish section for words such as "hacer", "estar", and "tener". These three verbs should be included not only with their individual meanings, but in expressions and idioms. Any decent dictionary should give you many different ways these verbs can be used in context.

If the dictionary you are looking at gives brief, one or two word definitions, few examples, no antonyms or synonyms, no parts of speech, it is not the right one for you. It may pay to spend a little extra to get something substantial, especially if you are just beginning to learn Spanish. Be very careful about inexpensive pocketbook dictionaries or inserts for your looseleaf binder. Most are not worth the paper they are printed on.
