Is it easy 2 learn spanish with an english spanish dictionary?

yes... although just a dictionary wont be enough. You will need other materials to really develop your Spanish language skills.

Although i have seen people learn with only a phrasebook %26amp; a dictionary (provided that they lived in a Spanish speaking country)Is it easy 2 learn spanish with an english spanish dictionary?
no, especially because it does not teach you grammar. if you just need a few vocab words thats fine but the spanish language can be difficult because like english, the "rules" in the language are often broken and there are exceptions. they "rules" are also very different from english. I would either take classes or use rosetta stone.
No. You'll have the words, but not their nuances. There are grammar rules, plus gender in ALL nouns, unlike English.

If you want to learn Spanish, I'd suggest signing up for a Spanish class at your community college or other school. Or, finding an online Spanish course, or one that is CD or DVD based. Then, finding some Spanish-speaking people to practice on. THEN take your English/Spanish dictionary, as they'll probably use words you have never heard. Is it easy 2 learn spanish with an english spanish dictionary?

Has anybody ever used the Velazquez Press Spanish-English Dictionary?

I just bought it at Costco, I've been told it was a really good dictionary to have around, what are your opinions about it?Has anybody ever used the Velazquez Press Spanish-English Dictionary?
I am a native Spanish speaker as well as a major in English. It is the most comprehensive reference book you can get when needing to translate anything. Plus it has a long history and looks good on the desk or library. Definitely a good purchase. Out of curiosity how much was it at Costco? I think they normally run at about $30. Costco seems to sell quality at a low price.

Why can't I find tamale in the Spanish dictionary on line?

Is it a feminine noun? Why can't I find tamale in the Spanish dictionary on line?
Basically, it's misspelled. It is TAMAL in singular; in plural, you say TAMALES.
The answers above are referred to "sweet corn cake" better known in South America as "humitas".

A tamale (in Spanish "tamal") is a wet tender powdered corn mass with a core of seasoned meat %26amp; mate stuff, wrapped in a large green leaf, and cooked in steam.

Each Latin American country has its own version of TAMALWhy can't I find tamale in the Spanish dictionary on line?
Marcelo麓s is the right answer. Why can't I find tamale in the Spanish dictionary on line?
That's right. The singular is Tamal.

Besides, tamal is a word that comes from the Nahuatl language (Tamalli), it's not Spanish.

A tamal is a steam-cooked meal dough with or without filling.

In Spanish the definition would be: Pasta de ma铆z envuelta en hojas de ma铆z o pl谩tano con o sin relleno, y cocida al vapor.
The online English-Spanish; Spanish -English dictionaries seem to be based on European (Castilian) Spanish and Latin American Spanish words often get short shrift.

Still, you can often google up words from the various Latin American countries if you want to, as well as the slang words. There are all kinds of special dictionaries and glossaries for them.
Tamale is what it is. There is no translation. Like enchalada, taco, burrito. It's a noun.

Tamale is seasoned, shredded meat (beef, chicken or pork) that is wrapped in raw corn bread, then wrapped in corn husk and steamed until the corn bread is done.

You remove the corn husk, and have sort of a "hot pocket" looking thing. It's like moist bread on the outside, and the meat also says really moist and tender. They are really good. Especially if they are made by a native Mexican from a traditional recipe.

    A good Spanish dictionary?

I went to the bookstore last night and saw the Oxford SPanish dictionary and the Haper Collin dictionary. They're quite impressive and heavy. Yet I am going to start Spanish in a few days and completely new to the language. So what should be a good Spanish dictionary for me, as I consider accelerated courses to be proficient in the language in a few years?

Is there any good dictionary that come with a CDs, with pronunciation like the English dictionaries's ones?A good Spanish dictionary?
Although the DRAE is the "Oxford English Dictionary" of the Spanish-speaking world, I assume you want a bilingual dictionary. I'm a fan of the Collins dictionary, the one that cost about 拢25/$50 in 1997. I've been using them for years, both for pleasure and in business.A good Spanish dictionary?

THE ROYAL SPANISH ACADEMY is the official royal institution responsible for regulating the Spanish language. It is based in Madrid, Spain, but is affiliated with national language academies in twenty-one Spanish-speaking nations through the Association of Spanish Language Academies.

The RAE is a major publisher of dictionaries and grammars, and has a formal procedure for admitting words to its publications. Its website includes an online dictionary and other resources, all in Spanish. Its most famous publication is the Diccionario de la lengua espa帽ola de la Real Academia Espa帽ola (Dictionary of the Spanish Language of the Royal Spanish Academy), the "DRAE".

  • A good, handy Spanish dictionary. Are you a Spanish specialist?

I'm thinking of buying a Spanish-English, English-Spanish dictionary for myself (take Spanish 12 in the up-coming new semester). What's the best Spanish dictionary that you ever used? By that I mean easy to understand, doesn't have complex explanations. I've looked up a number of dictionaries in the library, but none worked to me.A good, handy Spanish dictionary. Are you a Spanish specialist?
It depends on what level you are at. If you are a beginner (which I gather you are from the fact that you'll be taking Spanish 12), I recommend the "Diccionario Ingl茅s". This is actually a dictionary that are intended for Spanish speakers, but you can use it as an English speaker too. It defines English words in both English and Spanish, so you can see how some concepts in English are expressed in Spanish.

You don't really need a super-thick dictionary as a beginning-level language learner because you probably will never use all of those words. I use the University of Chicago Spanish-English Dictionary and I like it because it's thick enough to have a lot of words, but not too thick. That makes it more portable, too.

After I got to the point where I was looking for a monolingual Spanish dictionary, I got the Vox Diccionario Actual de la Lengua Espa帽ola and I am very happy with it.

I don't use this dictionary but I suspect that it's good: The Harper-Collins Beginner's Spanish Dictionary. It's a bilingual dictionary as well.

By the way, it's not just about the dictionary, but how you use it. So you can work on your dictionary skills and that will help with whatever dictionary you have.

Is it possible to learn Spanish by memorising a small dictionary?

In conjunction with a grammar book and a self-teaching book that goes up to B1 level?

NB: The dictionary I'm using is the Collins School DictionaryIs it possible to learn Spanish by memorising a small dictionary?
    Learn also its grammar.
Technically its possible. However you need to speak it (maybe use a vocal program) otherwise you might start speaking and with no practical use sound all wrong.

You also need to listen frequently to spanish speaking people to see if what you're reading makes sense upon hearing it.

There are also differences between regions/countries so a standard dictionary might not tell you all the vocabulary you need.Is it possible to learn Spanish by memorising a small dictionary?
Depends what your purpose is. No, you won't pass exams or be able to express complicated concepts by that method but perhaps that's not what you want..You can go an awful long way in terms of basic communication with 500 words and no more grammar than you can learn in 5 hours of applied study. When I first let loose on Spanish people I'd about an hour's study a day for a month under my belt and it went great.

It's an additional help of course that Spanish is a very very easy language. Suerte!"Is it possible to learn Spanish by memorising a small dictionary?
Yes, you can use a dictionary as a reference but first, you have to watch Dora the Explorer and Sesame Street to help you to learn to speak in Spanish.
learning a new language is mostly memorization and understanding. but make sure you have the right pronounciation or no matter how well you know it nobody will understand u LOL good luck :D
Only if you can use the language (my dad learned it solely by working with mexicans)

Strong's is a concordance that will tell you what the Hebrew and/or Greek words are for the English word. You can also listen to someone pronounce the words in Hebrew.

  • I need the best online english/spanish dictionary that is FREE?

I need to write a letter in spanish but i don't know the language that well. I have tried many websites, and have checked it over with friends that speak spanish. They don't even understand it!

Is there website where i can write my entire letter in english, and it will automatically change it to proper spanish, instead of using word-by-word reference?

PS: just if ur wondering, i CANNOT ask my spanish speaking friends...:-lI need the best online english/spanish dictionary that is FREE?
The problem with most automatic translation services is that words can mean different things depending on the context. For instance, you can say, "I dig that song" and the translator would say "I shovel that song" or something to that effect. Even seemingly straightforward translations are difficult.

Using a word-by-word translation is also not a good way of doing it, as different methods of grammar and usage can make the translated piece look like gibberish.

There are a few engines that are not free that are approaching human level intelligent translation, but there are just too many ambiguities to consider without having a human who understands not just the words, but the grammar, vocabulary, and context. For that, only human translation is the best way to send communications so they are understood.

Nearly all translation services are performed by humans in business and important correspondence.

I looked and had no luck. There are several online Spanish-Norwegian dictionaries, but I found none that were actual books. The closest I found was a multi-language dictionary, but it was not in print.

Interesting coincidence, I am mostly Norwegian by ancestry too, and I teach English to lots of people whose first language is Spanish. What a couple of really different languages! At least they have the same alphabet, more or less. It is not like Spanish to Mandarin. Now there's a leap!

The best bilingual English/Spanish dictionary I have is Collins Sp/Eng and Eng/Sp unabridged - fifth edition 1997, ISBN 84-253-3066-1. It seems to have all serious words, a good range of slang, a few naughty words (which JWs may not appreciate...) and many references to local usage in the various Latin American countries and regions.

It shows good detailed pronunciation of all English words using the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) but rarely gives pronunciation of Spanish words except in the very few cases where this is different from the spelling. However, there is a good guide to Spanish pronunciation so that EVERY word may be pronounced correctly.

    Hola George,

Now, another great dictionary (English-Spanish/ Spanish-English) which provides decent examples and even forums:

    http://www.wordreference.com/

    (3) Un diccionario de variantes del espa?ol (jergas incluídas)http://www3.unileon.es/dp/dfh/jmr/dicci/…

    ?Esto te ayudará!
hmm, I can't really understand come of the stuff you're saying, but I'll give it a try.

First off, there is no 'correct verbs' considering all the different spanish speaking countries, and the fact that each one uses words and phrases a little bit differently than the others.

Devolver in most cases means to return something, like returning a book to the library for example.

Mezclar is to mix or stir.

I learned both of those in spanish class from my Chilean teacher, but I also looked in my dictionary, and both of them were there.

I'm beginning to think that it's your dictionary. A good one is worth the few extra bucks.

But yeah, each country is different, so it really depends on who you're talking to, where your teacher is from, or who the spanish book is directed towards.

    Hope that helps.

Maybe use an internet dictionary next time?Where is a list of correct spanish verbs. I hear spanish i dont know look it up in dictionary isnt there?

I agree -partially- with one of the recent answers. The Royal Academy of Spanish Language publishes yearly its official ditionary. But you would make a big mistake if you thought that we -native Spanish speakers- read it each year and speak as it rules. Many words don′t mean the same in Spain than in Latin America. There is a very funny story taled by Karlos Argui?ano -a popular TV cook from Spain-, who lived a long time here in Argentina, and when he did an audition in Mar del Plata (the most important beaches in the country), he said to the people who was there: "Aquí que vosotros tenéis estas hermosas playas, podremos ir ma?ana temprano a coger unas conchas" ("here, where you have so nice beaches, we will be able to go tomorrow early to pick up some shells"). Many people got very disappointed, and many other laughed off loud. The reason was that in Spain "coger unas conchas" means "pick up some shells"... But in Argentina that means "to **** some *****"!!!... As if it was not difficult enough, we are all the time creating new verbs, in many cases because of Internet: "chatear" (to chat), "clickear" (to click), "resetear" (to reset). So... like always: the correct verbs are not in the dictionary... but in the streets.... Where real people use real language to be really communicated.

Assuming you're talking about Microsoft Word, it sounds like you've accidentally set the default language to Spanish. Try this to set it back to English:

In Word versions prior to Word 2007:

1.Press CTRL/A to select the entire document.

2.Click the Tools-%26gt;Language-%26gt;Set Language menu item.

3.Select the language you want in the list box.

4.If you want to make this the default language for future documents, click the Default button.

5.Click Yes in the message box.

    6.Click OK.

    In Word 2007:

1.Press CTRL/A to select the entire document.

2.Click the Review tab on the Ribbon.

3.In the Proofing section, click Set Language.

4.Continue as in Step 3, above.

    That should do it.

EDIT: Glad the answer worked for you. Now could you please award me Best Answer? Thanks.

  • Does anyone have a suggestion for Conversational Spanish/English Dictionary?

I'm going to Costa Rica and despite being told English is spoken, I was told I should get a good English/Spanish Conversational Phrase dictionary. I don't want just words but basic phrases translated and also I understand they don't speak traditional Spanish. I'm looking for things like Can I have the bill, How do I get to..., I have a reservation, etc.Does anyone have a suggestion for Conversational Spanish/English Dictionary?
    http://www.diccionarios.com

Requieres you to be susbscribe (free subscription)...
The Lonely Planet Latin American Phrasebook is pretty good (Amazon link below). If you find a more recent edition than the one in the link, I'd get the newer one. In addition, I suggest you also take a regular Spanish dictionary, preferably one that emphasizes Latin American Spanish.

In addition to Amazon, you can find these (or order them) in the foreign language section of any decent-sized bookstore. A chain store such as Borders or Barnes %26amp; Noble will have a pretty good selection, especially if you live in an area with large numbers of Spanish-speaking people.

I say "Latin American" because that will include the "regionalisms" that pertain to specific regions and countries. That's good insurance against accidentally saying something that's naughty in local slang, but that's more of an issue in Mexico than in Costa Rica. Have a good trip and hope that helps!Does anyone have a suggestion for Conversational Spanish/English Dictionary?

Yes...I got it at Sam's Club. Instant Immersion Spanish. I actually have the workbook in front of me, it also came with CD's and a dictionary/phrase book. Here's the website listed on the cover of the book.

Honestly, I don't have a good recommendation for a good phrasebook. They are hard to come by. I do, however, know of a good online dictionary of Costa Rican words. It's pretty comprehensive.

Where can I find an electronic dictionary as a reading companion for French and Spanish literature?

I need a dictionary with as many words as possible. Preferably I can find one for English-French-Spanish, but English- French is fine as well. I'd recommend the English-French Partner EF900 produced by Ectaco. I originally bought the English-Russian 900 series model from them and it helped me a lot in my language studies so I purchased a couple of language cards from them for French, German and Italian. I bet they have a similar language card for Spanish. I gotta tell you that I was very impressed with the vocabulary size and the overall product quality. Not to mention that I can get the same translation capabilities for each of these languages by simply swapping the extra cards that I purchased.Where can I find an electronic dictionary as a reading companion for French and Spanish literature?

    Microsoft word

Windows vista ultimateHow do i change the dictionary language to Spanish for Microsoft word spell check?
You didn't mention the version of Word you are using but for Microsoft Word 2003 it involves two steps:

Step 1: Find the "Microsoft Office Tools" folder in your Programs list. If you made the installation by default it should be located in:

Start -%26gt; All Programs -%26gt; Microsoft Office -%26gt; Microsoft Office Tools

And from there open "Microsoft Office 2003 Language Settings" and from that window add "Spanish" to the list of languages. If you have Office applications open at this time, you will have close them to apply the changes.

Step 2: Now when using Word you must have notice the language you are using in the task bar of Word (the one at the bottom). To switch to Spanish, you need to:

Tools --%26gt; Language --%26gt; Set Language

And from there select the appropiate Spanish version you need.

As an additional note, if you are using two languages already in Windows (you can check this in the Windows Language Bar) any time you switch languages, Word will automatically follow so that you don't have to set the language every time.

    Hope this helps!

chocolate, coche, dia, ingles, llama, Lobo, nina, ninguno, Noche, senora.

Alphabetical order is is completely the same, Spanish or English!!
well, alphabetical order is almost the same in English and Spanish. But the other answer don't take in consideration that words "nina" and "senora" actually have a 脩, not N (ni帽a and se帽ora). In Spanish alphabetical order, 脩 comes after N (and YES, 脩 is still an independent letter in Spanish alphabet).

    So, the order is:

chocolate, coche, d铆a, ingl茅s, llama, lobo, ninguno, ni帽a, noche, se帽ora.

(in dictionaries "ninguno" appears before "ni帽a")Write these words in alphabetical order as they would appear in a Spanish dictionary.?
Why can't you do this yourself?

alphabetization is alphabetization. It's the same...well, depending on how old the teacher expects the dictionary to be. LL, and ch are in different places, depending on where the dictionary falls in relation to when they changed the alphabet...(around 1980ish they removed those letters, and rr, and 帽 as being seperate letters, so they now fall in the same order as they do in English.)

online? use the instant translator at www.dictionary.com... many other languages are available as well. however, please note that no automated translator can translate as accurately as a human person who has a good command of both languages, so the outcome will just be an approximation. most likely, there will be some pretty embarrassing grammatical faux pas or misuse of words coming out of that instant translator.

do use that translator to make your job easier for you, so you can kinda feel around your spanish, but always cross check with a reliable source of good spanish, e.g. a reputable spanish newspaper, spanish dictionary/thesaurus, or friends who actually do speak spanish (and good english simultaneously as well).

if you don't have that third option, you can go to www.interglot.com. if the recommended spanish word from the instant translator sounds rather doubtful to you, counter-translate that word to english and keep finding substitute words until you find one that corresponds the original meaning best. also, be sure to check the grammar... in spanish you have 6 forms of the verb (e.g. soy, eres, es etc)... always be sure that the form of the verb matches the subject!Anyone know of a spanish english dictionary that translates full paragraps?
