Can you learn spanish by reading a spanish dictionary?

i bought the pimsleur approach cd's and im learning a bit by listening to that but i also want to be able to read and spell in spanish aswell, and i have an english/spanish dictionary lying around somewhere.|||I don't think you can learn just from the dictionary.. BUT..

I too have used the Pimsleur cds and this is what I did and it has helped tremendously.

I listened to the audio and whenever I got to a word I didn't know how to spell or was unsure of how it was spelled, I jotted it down. Then after each lesson I would consult my handy little dictionary to see if I had even remotely spelled the word correctly. I also bought the very inexpensive 501 Spanish Verbs book as an additional reference because as you will see, you will do a lot of different verb conjugations and it really helps to wrap your head around those too. So I just put little markers on each verb as I came across them.

Ok this is getting long, but it should really help you. So now if you check all of those as mentioned above and THEN once you know you have the right spellings write them in a little notepad, and each day you go to the next lesson, reference your notes, it will really help you to visualize and memorize all the words you have already learned.

Hope this helps

Where can I find a good spanish english dictionary?

I'm going to Spain soon and I want to get one of those electronic pocket dictionary/translator things. Where can I find a good quality spanish english pocket translator for a low price?|||Wordreference.com

Price: $0.00|||The short answer: Franklin DBE 1470 Spanish-English Dictionary. Can be found on Amazon or other online stores.

Reasoning for my preference:

I have used several electronic dictionaries, and you have to be careful because a lot of models will give you just one translation of each word (especially the cheap ones). A few years ago I came across that particular Franklin model. It's reasonably small, can survive drops, and keeps its batter life for a long time(just two double AAs if I remember right). The price is reasonable, somewhere around 35ish and you can still find them on Amazon. If you are a beginner, intermediate, or I would even say advanced you can use this dictionary with no problem. There are several definitions per word and it also specifies between Latin American and Spain Spanish. By the way some models have the up %26amp; down scroll arrows on the left side, towards the top (took me a while to discover those on the first day).

Having said all of that, I'm sure you can find other models, but I've liked that one a lot and I'm picky about my dictionaries. If you go for another dictionary, here is a good test. Check out the definition of the word "get." There should be several translations of this word, perhaps between 5 and 7 actual definitions and then at least 15 to 20 phrasal-verb forms (get + preposition, for instance "get out," "get up," etc.). If a dictionary can't give you at least around that number it's not worth buying (because keep in mind a full dictionary will give you over a 100 listings for "get"). You can test some other common verbs and also some nouns that tend to have more than one meaning. You don't have to go crazy but after you test a few words you'll see the difference. You don't necessarily need to spend $100 on a dictionary that has all of the listings, and if you are beginner or intermediate it's almost better to find a middle ground between having enough definitions and not too many because it quickly becomes overwhelming. :)

Finally, I recommend staying away from the ones that have 5 or 6 languages programmed in (unless you plan on learning that many languages at once, in which case you'll need a lot more than a dictionary to help you!). Those tend to have limited definitions in my experience, unless you really want to spend a lot of money...

You used to have an awesome Spanish-English dictionary off of the Yahooligans! section of your site. It seemingly disappeared, although I found it to be the most useful tool when writing Spanish papers or emails. I can't seem to find another one on the web that has the context as well as the translation.|||yahoo believes english should be the only language spoken now, ever since it became a law in the US

What's the best advanced spanish dictionary for learners?

U know like the oxford advanced english dictionary for learners. and also athe best spanish slang dictionary?|||Diccionario de la Real Academia Espa帽ola De La Lengua

http://www.rae.es/rae.html

Saludos !!!

Is there a rather simple Spanish dictionary for foreigners in the world?

I mean a monolingual one, no English, just Spanish.

Do not tell me to go for Real Academia Espa帽ola since it is too darn hard. It is not the one I want.

Something in a similar style to the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary should be fine.|||RAE is the best and a very complete dictionary. Anyways, if you want one with easier definitions, you can use this:

http://www.elmundo.es/diccionarios/

There you can chose:

- Lengua Espa帽ola

- Sin贸nimos

- Ant贸nimos

- Espa帽ol a ingl茅s

(...)

You have to chose "Lengua Espa帽ola" and then write the word you want... If you don't understand the definition, you can also check "sin贸nimos"... It may helps you!

I hope I helped! :)

What is the best translation dictionary (English - Spanish) for a Smartphone?

I need an English Spanish dictionary for my smartphone. It'd be good to have 'flash cards' and sound.

Also, good to be able to change translation direction without loosing the word I've started entering as I'm always enetering the wrong direction.

Best of all would be verb conjugation but I haven't seen any that do that :-(

I'd really like opinions from people who have actually used them ...|||I've got an Italian-English dictionary on my Nokia 95 8GB and I'm very happy with it. It's the Oxford University Press Concise Paravia by MSDict. I'm pretty sure there's a Spanish equivalent.

It doesn't have flash cards or sound but it does allow you to change direction while retaining what you have already input. It doesn't do conjudgation but does show unusual verb forms. It's really a very comprehensive dictionary and I find it easy to use and very useful when reading in Italian
